TJ Surgery Benches Smith

Giants pitcher Will Smith has been benched for the 2017 season due to his Tommy John surgery. The news arrived Friday, and Smith’s surgery is scheduled for this week. In a note to fans, Smith expressed his disappointment in the requirement for surgery, but plans to be back next season.

Smith was expected to be a set-up man in the Giants’ bullpen, so the obvious downside is that this won’t be happening this season. The upside is that it doesn’t change too much; I never included Smith in a previous post regarding the pitching staff.

The Giants picked up Smith during the trade deadline last season from the Milwaukee Brewers. He started 2016 on the disabled list, but finished the season with a 3.35 ERA over 40.3 innings.
